Gemstone Certificates Explained: GIA, IGI, SSEF, Gübelin, AIG and GFCO

GIA, IGI, SSEF, Gübelin, AIG and GFCO reports can look similar at first. What they test, and the information they provide, can be quite different.

When a diamond or coloured gemstone comes with a certificate, it is easy to assume that the document confirms everything there is to know about the stone. It doesn’t.

First, “certificate” is the word most commonly used in jewellery, but in many cases gemological report or laboratory report is more accurate. The laboratory examines the stone and records its findings. It isn’t certifying its price, and in the case of coloured gemstones it usually isn’t giving the stone an overall quality grade either.

What a report tells you depends on the stone, the laboratory and the type of analysis requested.

For a diamond, the report may include colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. For a sapphire, the more relevant questions may be whether it is natural, whether there are indications of heat treatment and, in some cases, whether its characteristics support a particular geographical origin. An emerald brings another question: has it been clarity enhanced?

This is why the laboratory name alone isn’t enough. You need to read what the report actually says.

What is a gemstone certificate?

A gemstone certificate is an independent gemological assessment of a stone. Depending on the report, it can contain identification, weight, measurements, shape, cutting style, colour, natural or synthetic origin and information about detectable treatments.

For certain coloured gemstones, some laboratories can also provide an opinion on geographical origin.

Diamond grading is more standardized. A diamond can receive individual grades for colour and clarity, alongside cut information and carat weight. These grades allow diamonds with similar characteristics to be compared using a common system.

Coloured gemstones are not graded in the same way.

A laboratory does not normally grade a sapphire with an equivalent of the diamond D-to-Z colour scale or assign it a standardized clarity grade. Instead, the report establishes specific gemological facts about the stone.

That difference is important when comparing certificates.

GIA certificates for diamonds and coloured gemstones

The Gemological Institute of America, better known as GIA, is closely associated with modern diamond grading.

GIA developed the D-to-Z colour scale and the clarity grading terminology that became widely used across the international diamond trade. Its grading system is one of the reasons terms such as F colour, VS1 clarity or SI2 clarity have a consistent meaning within the industry.

GIA diamond reports

A GIA report for a natural diamond can include carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade and, for eligible diamonds, a cut grade.

It also records measurements and can provide information on proportions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence. Depending on the report, clarity characteristics and proportion information may be shown in more detail.

Fancy-colour diamonds need a different type of assessment.

Here the laboratory examines the colour itself and, importantly, determines whether that colour is natural or has been altered through treatment. The report can describe the hue and intensity of the colour.

This distinction has a major effect on how a fancy-colour diamond is understood. A naturally occurring colour and an artificially modified colour are not equivalent.

GIA coloured gemstone reports

GIA also issues reports for coloured gemstones, but these shouldn’t be confused with its diamond grading reports.

For coloured stones, the work centres on identification and analysis.

A GIA coloured stone report can identify the gemstone and establish whether the material is natural or synthetic. It can also state detectable treatments and record information such as weight, measurements, shape, cutting style, transparency and colour.

For eligible gemstones, an Identification & Origin Report can add an opinion on geographical origin.

Take sapphire as an example. A report may identify the stone as natural corundum, variety sapphire, and state whether indications of heating have been detected. If origin analysis has also been requested and a conclusion can be reached, the report may give an opinion on geographical origin.

The distinction between natural and untreated is worth remembering. A sapphire can be completely natural and still have undergone heat treatment.

The same principle applies to emerald. A natural emerald may contain fissures that have been filled with oil, resin or another substance to reduce their visibility.

A good report separates these pieces of information rather than reducing the stone to a single label.

IGI certificates for coloured gemstones, natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds

The International Gemological Institute, or IGI, works across natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds, coloured gemstones and finished jewellery.

IGI is often discussed in connection with lab-grown diamonds, but that is only one part of its laboratory work.

IGI coloured gemstone certificates

IGI issues dedicated reports for coloured gemstones.

These can identify the gemstone species and variety, establish whether the material is natural or synthetic, and document physical characteristics such as weight and measurements. Depending on the stone and report service, information about detectable treatments can also be included.

This becomes particularly relevant with ruby, sapphire and emerald.

A natural ruby or sapphire may have been heated. An emerald can be natural while also having undergone clarity enhancement. The fact that a stone formed naturally does not answer the treatment question.

For gemstones and report services where origin determination is available, IGI can also provide an opinion on geographical origin.

Origin analysis is based on the properties of the stone itself. Gemologists examine internal characteristics and use analytical data to compare the stone with reference material from known deposits.

This is quite different from commercial provenance. A dealer may know where a gemstone was purchased or where it was represented as having been mined. A laboratory origin opinion is based on gemological evidence.

IGI natural diamond reports

IGI also provides detailed grading reports for natural diamonds.

These include the familiar diamond characteristics of carat weight, colour and clarity, together with cut information where applicable. Measurements, proportions, polish, symmetry, fluorescence and other relevant characteristics can also appear on the report.

As with any diamond report, the laboratory name and the grade are separate things. An IGI report documents the quality characteristics found during grading. It does not, by itself, make the diamond a high-quality stone.

IGI certificates for lab-grown diamonds

IGI has a particularly established position in laboratory-grown diamond grading.

A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond. It has essentially the same crystal structure and fundamental chemical and optical properties as a natural diamond. What differs is how it formed.

That origin needs to be clearly disclosed on the report.

From there, the individual diamond still needs to be assessed.

IGI lab-grown diamond reports retain detailed quality information, including carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade and cut information where applicable. Measurements, proportions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence can also be documented.

This level of detail is useful because the words lab-grown diamond tell us nothing about the quality of the individual stone.

Two lab-grown diamonds can have the same carat weight and still differ in colour, clarity and cut. Even two diamonds with very similar grades on paper may have different proportions.

There is also a current difference between the way IGI and GIA report qualifying colourless-to-near-colourless laboratory-grown diamonds.

GIA moved away from the traditional individual colour and clarity terminology for these stones and now uses broader Premium and Standard quality classifications.

IGI continues to state the individual quality grades.

SSEF certificates and coloured gemstone analysis

The Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF is well established in the analysis of coloured gemstones, diamonds and pearls.

SSEF is particularly relevant when a coloured gemstone needs more extensive investigation. With an important ruby, sapphire or emerald, identification may be only the first question.

Treatment can matter just as much.

Treatment analysis

Ruby and sapphire are commonly examined for evidence of heating. Depending on the stone, laboratories may also investigate other forms of treatment.

With emerald, fissure filling is an important part of the examination.

Emerald naturally tends to contain fissures. These can be filled with oil or other substances to make them less visible. Laboratory analysis can identify the presence of clarity modification and provide further information according to the report and findings.

Again, a treated natural stone remains natural.

Treatment status describes something different: what happened to the gemstone after it formed.

SSEF origin reports

SSEF also performs geographical-origin determination for eligible gemstones.

Origin cannot be established simply by looking at the colour of a stone. Nor is the laboratory confirming a story supplied by the seller.

Gemologists study microscopic inclusions and internal structures, chemical composition and spectroscopic characteristics. The results are compared with reference stones whose provenance is known.

Sometimes the evidence supports a geographical-origin opinion. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Gem deposits can share characteristics, and an individual stone may not contain enough diagnostic information for the laboratory to reach a sufficiently reliable conclusion. An inconclusive origin result does not mean there is something wrong with the gemstone. It means the available evidence isn’t strong enough to make the attribution.

 

Gübelin certificates for coloured gemstones

Gübelin Gem Lab is another established laboratory associated with advanced coloured gemstone analysis.

Its work is particularly relevant to ruby, sapphire, emerald and other significant coloured stones where treatment status and geographical origin form an important part of the documentation.

A Gübelin report can identify a gemstone, provide information about detectable treatments and, for eligible stones, give an opinion on geographical origin.

The process combines traditional gemological examination with analytical methods and comparison against reference material.

Origin should still be kept separate from quality.

A sapphire attributed to a historically important source is not automatically better than a sapphire from another deposit. Two stones with the same origin can differ greatly in colour, transparency, inclusions and cut.

An origin report answers an origin question. Nothing more needs to be read into it.

AIG certificates

AIG, the American International GemLab, provides laboratory reports for diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery.

For coloured stones, reports can include gemstone identification, natural or synthetic status, weight, measurements and information concerning detectable treatments. Depending on the stone and report service, geographical-origin analysis may also be available.

Diamond reports document the standard characteristics used in diamond grading, including carat weight, colour, clarity and cut-related information.

AIG reports are found across the international gemstone trade and provide independent documentation for a broad range of stones.

As with any laboratory, it is important to check the exact report type. A basic identification report and a more extensive treatment or origin report do not provide the same information simply because they carry the same laboratory name.

GFCO certificates

GFCO Gem Lab also issues reports for coloured gemstones and jewellery, with different levels of examination depending on the report requested.

A report can document gemstone identity and physical characteristics such as weight, measurements, colour and cutting information.

Treatment information may be included where applicable. More extensive analysis can also provide an opinion on geographical origin for stones where the laboratory offers that service and the evidence allows a conclusion.

This is a useful example of why not every gemstone needs exactly the same type of certificate.

Sometimes the main question is identification. Is this a natural sapphire?

For another stone, treatment is important. Has this sapphire been heated?

For a more significant stone, geographical origin may also form an important part of its commercial description.

The appropriate laboratory report depends on which of those questions needs an answer.

GIA vs IGI vs SSEF vs Gübelin vs AIG vs GFCO

There is no single gemstone certificate that makes sense for every stone.

GIA is one of the main international references for natural diamond grading and also performs extensive identification, treatment and origin analysis for coloured gemstones.

IGI covers natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery. Its coloured stone reports provide independent identification and treatment information, with origin services available where applicable. For lab-grown diamonds, IGI continues to provide detailed individual quality grades.

SSEF has a strong position in advanced coloured gemstone and pearl analysis, particularly when treatment and geographical origin need detailed investigation.

Gübelin Gem Lab is similarly associated with important coloured gemstones and advanced treatment and origin analysis.

AIG issues reports for diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery, ranging from identification and grading to treatment and origin services depending on the stone and report.

GFCO provides coloured gemstone and jewellery reports at different levels, including identification and, where applicable, treatment and origin information.

The difference is not simply a hierarchy of “good” and “bad” certificates. What matters is the laboratory’s expertise, the report requested and the question that needs to be answered.

How to read a gemstone certificate

There are four separate pieces of information to look for.

Identification tells you what the material is and whether it is natural or synthetic.

Grading describes defined quality characteristics. This is most familiar in diamonds, where individual colour, clarity and cut grades are used.

Treatment analysis looks for evidence that the stone has been altered after formation through processes such as heating, fissure filling or diffusion.

Geographical origin is a laboratory opinion about where a natural gemstone formed, based on the gemological and analytical evidence available.

A report may contain one, several or all of these elements.

This is why the phrase certified sapphire doesn’t say very much on its own.

“Natural sapphire, no indications of heating, with a laboratory opinion on geographical origin” tells us considerably more.

Does a gemstone certificate determine its value?

No.

A standard gemological report should not be confused with a valuation.

This becomes particularly clear with coloured gemstones.

Two sapphires can both be natural, unheated and assigned the same geographical origin while looking very different from each other. Their colour may differ in tone and saturation. One may be highly transparent, another heavily included. One cut may distribute light evenly across the stone while another creates large dark areas.

Those differences affect how the gemstones are perceived and valued, but they are not reduced to a single standardized grade on the certificate.

Diamond grading is more systematic, but the report still needs to be read as a collection of characteristics rather than as a verdict on the stone.

Which gemstone certificate should you look for?

For natural diamonds, GIA and IGI provide detailed grading reports covering the characteristics used to describe and compare diamonds.

For lab-grown diamonds, IGI continues to provide individual colour, clarity and cut information. Valentina Leardi Fine Jewelry therefore uses IGI-certified laboratory-grown diamonds.

AIG and GFCO also issue independent reports for coloured gemstones, with the information provided depending on the stone and level of analysis requested. 

So when a gemstone is described as certified, don’t stop at the laboratory logo. Read the report.

Check whether the stone is natural or synthetic. Look at the treatment section. If geographical origin is part of the description, check whether the laboratory actually tested for it. With diamonds, read the individual grades and proportions.

The purpose of a gemstone certificate is quite practical. It records what an independent laboratory was able to establish about the stone.

Understanding those findings is what makes the document useful.
